The VHS Learning (formerly known as Virtual High School) is a global consortium of schools based in Massachusetts that provides a teacher for asynchronous (no live components) classes of up to 25 students from around the world (average is 21 students). They offer over 200 courses with some very specific electives including: Criminology, Genes & Diseases, Latin, Screenwriting Fundamentals, American Sign Language, and The Glory of Ancient Rome.
TASD students can take courses through VHS as part of their TVA program, however the VHS enrollment is not a rolling admission process. VHS classes can only be added during a specific drop/add period each semester. Please view the VHS calendar at the right of this page.
VHS classes run either 15 weeks for a semester class (fall or spring) or 33 weeks for a year-long class (usually AP classes or core subjects). Students must follow the Wednesday through Tuesday VHS school week and complete assignments based on this schedule. Students can expect 5-7 hours of work for a standard level class per work and additional hours for an Honors or AP level. Students enrolling in an AP VHS class must pay for and take the AP Exam in May.
VHS teachers are assigned by VHS and are teachers from around the globe. Students use a private discussion (called a PT or Private Topic) to communicate with their teacher instead of email. Students can also contact their Site Coordinator (SC) to assist them with issues relating to their VHS course. Tulpehocken has 2 SC's - Mrs. Erika Kindoll & Mrs. Aurilie Eckenrode.
Online registration begins in early to mid May for the following school year. Tulpehocken currently has 20 fall and 20 spring seats available to all students in grades 7-12 (any Tulpehocken student, not just TVA students, are eligible to take a VHS course) with a 80% GPA or higher. Students interested in taking a VHS course as part of their TVA program should complete the pre-enrollment questionnaire and preview the VHS catalog for prerequisites and course descriptions.
